Background of the Study
Infectious diseases are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in Nigeria, with diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS presenting significant challenges to public health. Genomic research on infectious diseases plays a vital role in understanding the pathogens responsible, their genetic makeup, and how they evolve and adapt to treatments. However, managing the vast amounts of genomic data generated by modern sequencing technologies remains a major challenge. A robust genomic data management system is needed to store, organize, and analyze this data effectively. Bayero University, Kano State, offers an opportunity to design and implement such a system, facilitating more efficient research on infectious diseases. This study aims to develop a genomic data management system that can store, manage, and analyze genomic data from infectious disease research, providing valuable insights into disease mechanisms and treatment options.

Statement of the Problem
The growing volume of genomic data generated in infectious disease research poses challenges for data management, storage, and analysis. Many institutions, particularly in developing countries like Nigeria, lack the infrastructure and systems necessary to manage and analyze these large datasets effectively. The absence of a centralized system for genomic data management hampers collaboration, slows down research progress, and limits the potential impact of genomic discoveries on public health. Bayero University, Kano State, can play a crucial role in addressing this problem by developing a comprehensive genomic data management system that meets the needs of infectious disease researchers in Nigeria.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To design and implement a genomic data management system for infectious disease research.

  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of the system in storing and organizing large genomic datasets.

  3. To assess the potential impact of the system on infectious disease research in Nigeria.

Research Questions

  1. How can a genomic data management system improve the organization and storage of genomic data in infectious disease research?

  2. What are the key features required for an effective genomic data management system in infectious disease research?

  3. How can the implemented system contribute to the advancement of infectious disease research in Nigeria?

Significance of the Study
The study will contribute to the development of an essential tool for genomic data management in infectious disease research in Nigeria. By providing a scalable and efficient system, the research will enhance collaboration among researchers, improve data accessibility, and accelerate the identification of genetic factors involved in infectious diseases.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the design and implementation of a genomic data management system for infectious disease research at Bayero University, Kano State. Limitations include the complexity of integrating existing data sources and ensuring system scalability to accommodate future data growth.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Genomic Data Management System: A platform or software designed to store, organize, and analyze genomic data efficiently.

  2. Infectious Disease Research: The study of pathogens, their genetic makeup, and how they cause disease in humans or other organisms.

  3. Genomic Data: Information related to the DNA of organisms, often obtained through high-throughput sequencing technologies.
